I was very sorry to hear that. You taught me to appreciate him.
He was another of those whose music I knew from the cradle–a true original, definitely the greatest of the ones whose careers flowered after Ol’ Hank passed. His voice was noticeably weaker the past few years but always filled with that keening loneliness, and sometimes with a raucous humor that never failed to bring a smile. Gonna miss him–
He was a legend. I got to see him in West Virginia some years ago, and really enjoyed myself. RIP Possum.
My mom, brother and sister got to see him once during his “No Show” years–Susan even had a shirt she wore for years that proudly proclaimed I saw No Show Jones!. Can’t remember why I didn’t go with them–surely regret it now–
Too true, Faire… He was a wonderful talent, and quite the man. He did stop Lovin her today, and I’m sure there’s a wreath upon his door… Godspeed, Possum, my cousin of long misplaced lineage, we will remember you very fondly.. RIP
As I said (somewhat melodramatically) on Facebook, he was no doubt met at the door to Hillbilly Heaven with the words Step right up/come on in– And he walked in with that George Jones smile–
He was a great talent, and wonderful person.. I never got the opportunity to see him perform, and now I won’t, on this planet… Godspeed, my cousin, multiple times removed, until we join you there,
we will still have your music to remember you by so fondly,.. RIP, Possum!
My dad was a great Possum fan–I’ve long laughed since Dad’s passing twenty odd years ago that there must be a great honky tonk in one corner of heaven, and man, are they celebrating tonight!
BTW, how are you related to Possum?
He said on Ralph Emerys show once that all Joneses are related, we all stem from a Welsh miner back in the day..my maternal grandfather has Joneses in the line, my dad was a Jones, as am I, Nancy and I joked about it a couple times.. My sister is in process of genealogy, dads side may be tough, his father, to be polite, left when dad was two months old. Charmer. Lovin the stories, hope you’ll have more for awhile!!
I read somewhere once that there are only about six surnames common among Welshmen and they usually add a descriptor to distinguish individuals–in which case Possum would be Jones the Singer, without a doubt-
As for your dad’s dad leaving when your dad was a baby, we’ve got a similar story in the family about why there was seven years and a bunch of Colorado cousins we’ve never met between the births of my paternal great-aunt and grandfather, so I empathize. Went on walkabout– 🙂
Am trying to get back in writing form. My work hours are rather irregular for the present though–hope they’ll get more regular soon!
