Some years ago, when I was a member of the choir at a local Methodist church, I was asked to help choose music for the Palm Sunday service, and this piece immediately came to mind.
From Loreena McKennitt’s 1994 CD THE MASK AND MIRROR, “Santiago” is built around a melody that was actually played, centuries ago, by pilgrims on the route to Spain’s great pilgrimage destination, Santiago de Compostela (St. James in the Field of Stars).
Palm Sunday is associated with Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, as recounted in the Gospels of Luke (19:28-38) and John (12:12-15) during Holy Week. Nobody save Christ himself knew how that week would end; the crowd that “took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him” was a joyous one. We used it for a children’s processional up the aisle to open the service.
This music is joyous. It makes my heart–and my feet–dance.:)
